Flooding Disaster Imperils Peru’s Pan Am Games

March 20, 2017. — Inside the Gamesâ?? Dan Palmer reported on March 19 that there are calls to cancel the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima owing to the state of emergency created by floods affecting half of Peru. Over 70 people have died following torrential rain and mudslides.

According to Palmerâ??s report, more than 800 towns and cities have been declared in a state of emergency with bridges and roads washed away and shortages of food and water. More than 60,000 homes have been destroyed in 24 out of Peru’s 25 states.

The natural disaster  has led to calls for the money allocated for the Games (an estimated $1.2 billion (£968 million/1.116 million) to be redirected towards the relief effort.

So far the country’s President, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, has rejected calls to forfeit the Games which are scheduled to take place between July 26 and August 11, 2019.

ISCC names FEI as its International Sports Federation of the Year

Lausanne, Switzerland. December 9, 2016.–The FEI has been declared International Sports Federation of the Year at the International Sports Convention (ISC). The award, which recognises the work of the international governing body for equestrian sport, including its leadership in integrity and governance, was presented yesterday, December 8, during the convention held in Geneva (SUI).
Voted for by members of the Swiss-based International Sports Chamber of Commerce (ISCC) and ISC conference delegates, the annual awards celebrate the best work in global sport, recognising individual, group and company achievements.
This award tops off a year of recognition that has also included significant accolades for key elements of the FEIâ??s #TwoHearts Olympic campaign â?? Billy to Rio and the ground-breaking video Hoofloose.
Launched in May 2016, #TwoHearts has grown from a concept designed to connect sports fans, athletes, National Federations and media from all over the world, celebrating the unique relationship between horse and human, to become an iconic brand adopted by the global equestrian community. A key feature of the campaign was the introduction of innovative creative tactics, including videos and imagery designed to challenge peopleâ??s perceptions of the sport.
Billy to Rio, the FEIâ??s social media project focused on engaging new fans, won two bronze Lovie awards in the Internet Video and Social categories in September. The Lovie Awards are recognised as the most prestigious and the only truly pan-European awards honouring online excellence. Billy to Rio was also the winner of Equestrian Commercial â?? International at last monthâ??s Equus Film Festival 2016 in New York City (USA).
Directed by Jacobsen Luiza, Billy to Rio follows the journey of a lovable and mischievous horse as he chases his dream of becoming an Olympic champion. Billy is seen testing out numerous Olympic sports before taking on all three Olympic equestrian disciplines, with content going out to fans via social media platforms.
The innovative Hoofloose video, again designed to bring equestrian sport to an entirely new audience, won an award at the Grand Prix Romand de la Création under the Craft Film category last month. The Grand Prix Romand de la Création is the only Swiss-French award for communication and creativity. Hoofloose also won this yearâ??s GRAND award, which rewards the best creative project among all submitted projects across all categories.
#TwoHearts has been the most successful campaign ever run by the FEI. With a targeted focus on the territories of Brazil, USA, China, Russia and Japan, and ongoing placement of stories, images and videos across the rest of the world, the campaign saw extensive engagement across social media, press, broadcast and digital.
Social media engagement (the number of interactions people had with the content) in the five targeted territories saw 8,048,932 interactions across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, You Tube, VK, OK and Weibo, with over 5,000 press articles (online and print) and more than 1,000 broadcast pieces. Overall this created 19.5 billion opportunities to see non-competition footage across broadcast, print, online and mobile. In addition to these figures, there were also almost 3,000 press articles published across the rest of the world.
â??This has been an amazing year for the FEI, with hugely successful Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio and fantastic results from our Two Hearts campaignâ?, FEI Secretary General Sabrina Ibáñez said. â??The awards for Two Hearts are recognition of the FEIâ??s commitment to engage with horse lovers around the world. Working together with National Federations, agencies, athletes, grooms and many other individuals, we have achieved success and have increased the visibility for equestrian sport. It is incredible to finish off the year being named as International Sports Federation of the Year. We couldnâ??t be happier or more proud of this recognition!â?
The FEI worked with a number of agencies on the #TwoHearts campaign, including Ogilvy, Weber Shandwick, Tall, Pixel For Dinner and Butt First.

The A+ Award was established in 2010 by Alltech, in collaboration with the IAEJ, to reward creativity, passion and excellence in equestrian journalism. Initially, the focus of the awards program was coverage of the 2010 and 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. The theme for the 2015-2016 contest was “Stories of Triumph”.

The highly competitive contest, which attracted entries from around the world, was judged by Grania Willis, FEI communications director, Alan Smith, former Daily Telegraph equestrian correspondent, and photographer Peter Llewellyn, photo manager for the 2012 London Olympic and 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games. The judges deliberated without knowing the names of the contestants. No one from IAEJ or Alltech was involved in the judging process.

“It is a delight to continue to honor the creative storytellers within the equestrian world” said Susanna Elliott, corporate communications manager at Alltech.  “They captivate us with their words, mesmerize us with their photos and draw us into a deeper understanding and appreciation of the horse”

The winners of this year’s Alltech A+ Award are:

  • Article Category: Kim F. Miller, Newport Beach, California, USA; “The Comeback Kids” published in California Riding Magazine, August 2015 issue.

Tönjes, the editor of St. Georg magazine, is a three-time winner, having also scooped the award in 2013 and 2015. Shearwood is also a repeat winner, having taken the top prize for another photograph in 2012. Each of the winners will receive an Alltech A+ Award trophy and a $500 USD prize.

“The IAEJ is extremely grateful to Alltech for its continued recognition of the media and its contribution to equestrian sport” said Pamela Young, IAEJ president. “Alltech’s generous support for these awards is much appreciated by our members, who work tirelessly to convey the passion and beauty of our sport worldwide.”
