Flooding Disaster Imperils Peru’s Pan Am Games

March 20, 2017. — Inside the Games’ Dan Palmer reported on March 19 that there are calls to cancel the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima owing to the state of emergency created by floods affecting half of Peru. Over 70 people have died following torrential rain and mudslides.

According to Palmer’s report, more than 800 towns and cities have been declared in a state of emergency with bridges and roads washed away and shortages of food and water. More than 60,000 homes have been destroyed in 24 out of Peru’s 25 states.

The natural disaster  has led to calls for the money allocated for the Games (an estimated $1.2 billion (£968 million/€1.116 million) to be redirected towards the relief effort.

So far the country’s President, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, has rejected calls to forfeit the Games which are scheduled to take place between July 26 and August 11, 2019.
